Director

Máire is a professionally qualified social worker, having entered the profession in 1978. She retired at the age of 56 from her role as Principal Social Worker in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Over the course of her career, Máire worked extensively across a wide range of social work settings, with a particular focus on organising, developing, and delivering child and family services in both voluntary and statutory sectors. She has significant experience in supervising, managing, and training practitioners, working effectively within both unidisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.

Máire’s personal experience of growing up with polio has deeply informed her practice and perspective throughout her professional life. Alongside her career, she has contributed in a voluntary capacity to a wide variety of initiatives, including adult literacy support, anti-poverty programmes, cancer support services, and pre- and postnatal maternal support, serving both as a volunteer and a committee member. She is a strong advocate for equal rights and opportunities for all and believes in supporting individuals to live with independence and dignity. She recognises the vital role of Polio Survivors Ireland in advocacy and support, and she is eager to bring her personal insight and professional expertise to the work of the Board.
