A Guide to Staying Hydrated for the Summer

With heatwaves coming and going, temperatures can be hard to predict. Staying hydrated is surely important all year, but especially in hot weather! Drinking enough water can help with headaches, dizziness, and preventing falls.
It is generally recommended for women to have 6-8 glasses of water every day, and 8-10 for men. Different medical conditions can affect how much you should drink. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your GP if you have difficulty getting enough water on board.
Throughout your day, making sure that drinks are within your reach helps. Having a variety of drinks can make it easier to keep hydrated, and don’t forget that foods count too. Aside from liquids, foods like fruits, soups, and yogurts can add to your daily intake.
If you take medication, you can drink water at that time of the day. You can build hydration into mealtimes, too.
Reusable water bottles have been a big trend over the last few years, but they do not work for everyone. Holding and drinking from bottles can be difficult if you experience muscle control issues, reduced grip, stiffness in the neck, or other mobility needs.
Options like two-handled mugs, angled cups that do not require tilting back to drink, or different types of straws are meant to help. Staying hydrated is important for everyone, and different devices can be useful to manage it. As we move into July and the summer goes on, we hope these tips will be useful in staying safe and cool all season.
