World Polio Day 2025

Pictured at our event in the AV Room in Leinster House, this week, to mark today’s World Polio Day, 24th October, are members and staff of Polio Survivors Ireland, with @erin_mcgreehan, who hosted our presentation to public representatives.

You can’t retire from a disability.

Our campaign to highlight the needs of polio survivors who are forced into a gap, once they turn 65, is ongoing and we continue to advocate on their behalf, to try to improve their access to the specialised services and supports they require.

World Polio Day marks the birth of Jonus Salk, who led the team who developed the first polio vaccine, which led to the eradication in the Western world. Polio continues to be endemic in two countries and it has never been more imporant to ensure children continue to receive this essential vaccine, given in Ireland as part of the childhood immunisation programme.
