20160804_104340Our autumn issue of Survivor magazine, out today, is very special to the Post Polio Support Group, being a commemorative issue in memory of Sean Mac Diarmada, 1916 Rising Leader, Proclamation Signatory and Polio Survivor.

The issue features an image of the painting recently donated by artist Carol Quinn Wallace, of Sean Mac Diarmada, which she produced to coincide with her exhibition, A Nation Rises. This is available to view in the Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire. Ms Quinn Wallace hails from Dundalk.

Sean Mac Diarmada contracted Polio in 1911, following a lengthy recovery in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, he was left with a limp requiring a walking stick for the rest of his life. Regardless he carried on as one of the main architects of the 1916 Rising, showing many of the personalities tenets common to Polio Survivors – determination, independence and bravery.

The autumn issue of Survivor magazine also tells the story of one of the Children of the Rising mentioned in Joe Duffy’s book, who was related to the wife of a member of PPSG.

Additionally there are articles on travel, a report and photos from our national conference and AGM and tributes on recently deceased members who were hugely involved in the organisation in previous years.

Members will receive their copy by post. The issue will soon be available online and anyone who wishes to obtain a copy or find out more about the Post Polio Support Group, email info@polio.ie or call 01 889 89 20.
