We Can’t Continue Our Work Without Your Support:
Polio is gone from Ireland, but the legacy of polio is the ongoing support and help required by polio survivors. There are thought to be 5,000 polio survivors in Ireland, all of whom have increasing needs as they age. We want to support them all, but we need your help!
Donate:
Your donations can help us pay for callipers, specialist shoes, wheelchairs and even heating support for polio survivors. Polio survivors are intolerant to cold because of their condition, and it is vital to ensure polio survivors are not at risk of hypothermia.
Your support also funds physiotherapy, chiropody services and occupational therapies for polio survivors which can help with adapting their living environments to maximise their mobility and independence. It allows us to fund counselling sessions and respite breaks for survivors who have been dealing with the effects of polio since they were only babies or young children.
How your donation helps:
€20
Pay for a survivor to attend a social event to combat isolation and loneliness.
€30
Provide training for peer to peer support between survivors.
€125
Fund a heating grant for a survivor who suffers from severe intolerance to cold.
€250
Help buy a specialist pair of orthotic shoes.
€500
Part fund a stairlift to enable a survivor to stay in their own home.

We use www.idonate.ie to process donations and to support your fundraising efforts. You can make a one-off payment or donations, anonymously, or you can set up a Cause Page to raise money via a fundraising event, fun run or marathon.
Leave a legacy:
Considering what you leave behind when you pass away is a very personal matter. We know that you will want to think of your family, friends, and those you love first. But you can also provide an enduring gift for the causes you believe in. We would be truly honoured to be part of your legacy.
A gift in your Will could help Polio Survivors Ireland to continue to support the many polio survivors, who are struggling with the Late Effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome (PPS). Some of the benefits will include distributing vital information, providing welfare and support services, funding heating, and respite care – all helping members to have a better quality of life.
We are extremely grateful for any gift you can give – it would be impossible to continue to help members without legacies. For some people, a gift can be a tribute to a person they have lost, or to someone who benefited from the support provided by Polio Survivors Ireland.
Our promise:
- Your legacy will go directly to sustain polio survivors in their homes and communities, allowing them to live with dignity. Because the HSE assists us by funding certain supports and our administrative costs, you can be sure that your gift will be used to help polio survivors in need.
- Your privacy is extremely important to us. We respect your privacy and will look after your gift to us with sensitivity, care, and confidentiality.
- We know that the decision to leave a legacy is yours alone and that circumstances can change. You may, of course, change your mind about your gift to Polio Survivors Ireland at any time in the future.
- We are discreet. You do not have to tell us if you intend to leave a gift to Polio Survivors Ireland, but if you do, it will help us to plan future work and allow us to thank you.
- We are always here. If there is anything you want to know about your gift to us, or the polio survivors you are helping to maintain their independence and dignity, please get in touch.
Guide to legacies:
Pecuniary gift
A pecuniary gift in a Will is a gift of a specific sum. Remember, any amount, whatever you can afford after family and friends are taken care of, is priceless to those polio survivors who need support.
Residuary gift
A residuary gift in a Will is a gift of part of an estate. This is a share of your estate that has not been promised to family or friends. These kinds of gifts are enormously valuable in supporting our work.
Specific item
This is where you generously select a specific item of value such as stocks, shares, jewellery, property, the proceeds of a life assurance policy or other valuable items.
Codicil to a Will
A codicil to a Will is an addition to a Will. If you have already written a Will but decide you would like to include a gift for Polio Survivors Ireland, you can ask a solicitor to add a codicil, or an addition to your original Will.
A codicil is simple to add and is signed in the same way as your original Will, with a witness present and will be added to a permanent part of the Will.
Tax relief:
If you are a taxpayer in Ireland and have given €250 or more to Polio Survivors Ireland in the course of a tax year, your donation(s) can be worth 45% more at no extra cost to you.
The process is simple, and we would be happy to help you if you need!

Inspiration:
As a fun and active way to fundraise for Polio Survivors Ireland in our 30th anniversary year, our member Fiona, alongside Communications & Development officer Emma, came up with the 30 Minutes for 30 Days challenge. Although polio has been around for a lot longer than 30 years, the late effects of polio only became recognised as a separate condition (Post Polio Syndrome) around 30 years ago. This inspired the founding of Polio Survivors Ireland! To highlight those 30 years, Emma and Fiona undertook 30 minutes for 30 days- doing something active every single day in September, and asking their friends and family to sponsor them. They raised over €200!
Support us on your birthday:
You can set up an iDonate Fundraiser and ask for donations rather than gifts, to really make an impact!
