School around the Corner- 1962
A shout out to anyone who was featured in The School Around the Corner, on Christmas Day 1962.
One of our members, Ben Shine, was interviewed at age 13, by host Paddy Crosbie and he played the mouth organ. Ben remembers is being shot at Cappagh Hospital a few weeks before Christmas. He recalls, “It was a selection of inmates and was mostly Polio and some TB sufferers. The nurses were in their best uniforms with Blue capes and they sang Carols.”
It was filmed in Black & White and Ben, now turning 74, is looking for a copy of the programme. Between us we’ve trawled through the RTE Archives and Ben contacted TG4, but they say it may have been deleted or even sent to UTV. There are some ‘stills’ photos online, but none featuring Ben himself.
If anyone happens to have come across this programme, even on an old videotape at home, do let us know. Or if you were there that day and recall the filming we can put you in touch with Ben to reminisce.
